I also carefully search and evaluate sources about Jesus, something I have never encountered in my extensive reading in this field. I found Dean’s work to be rather convincing given the steps taken to only accept information that could be substantiated with historical writings from the time period limited to those who could possibly have been first person witnesses to Jesus. Having just returned fro a trip to the Holy Land Dean’s book as a resource added greatly to my envisioning it during the time of Christ.

As a believer, I was very interested to read this book. I respect a strong premise and this book was going to break through the walls between science, history, and Jesus Christ. I read it intently trying to see if Dean was 100% successful in proving his thesis.

The historical information is presented in an approachable way, much like many Christian writers from the past. The documented information is hard to deny and even as a believer, I learned new things I didn’t know before. The pacing makes it easy to pick up and read for hours or a couple of minutes at a time. I enjoyed the images accompanying the writing, too.

A wonderful treatise on the life and death of Jesus. A book both believers and nonbelievers will find enjoyable. A recommended read for anyone looking for truth and light.

The author does a good job of explaining how he conducted the research for this book though why Chapter 11 Applying the Credible Facts Rule is one paragraph long baffles me. If it is important enough to include as a chapter, go into a bit more detail. I'm not sure the author was able to answer the Three Questions due to the lack of material from the time period searched. An interesting read but not a quick read and did require time to think about the information shared. I loved the quotes at the beginning of each chapter. The Appendices at the end are book length with interesting information. I received an ARC of this book from Hidden Gems. This is my voluntary review.

I am rather glad I got this arc as early as I did from Hidden Gems. This was not a quick read in any manner. It is thought provoking and interesting. It is well researched and I respect the point of view of the author. If you are a believer or not this book will give some insight. Did it change my views or cement them I would say no but I did enjoy this piece. I did receive a free copy of this book from Hidden Gems and voluntarily chose to review it.

Dean cites an impressive range of textual and other cultural material to illuminate the story of Jesus in historical context. However, Dean arbitrarily dismisses any material he doesn't like. He gives little, if any, justification for dismissing or contradicting many portions of the NT text. For just one glaring example, he tediously explains how the term "naked" doesn't necessarily imply nudity to comment on a text (Mark 14:51-52) that explicitly describes how a man came to be nude. This particular misreading has only minor significance, but other misreadings in the book seriously distort the information we have about Jesus.

_Salt & Light_ is a clever critique of the New Testament stories of Jesus, but the cleverness doesn't imply validity.

This was a very interesting read on who Jesus was beyond the religious beliefs. The information was well presented and easy to follow. I enjoyed the research that most of us do not have the time or resources to do.
