Editorial Reviews
Review
“This classic story is faithfully adapted into a new medium with beautifully earthy illustrations that give each rabbit personality and new life . . . the underlying commentary on environmental impact provides a deeper, more complex tale that will appeal to older audiences, even on repeat readings.”—Booklist, starred review
“This graphic novel version features outstanding art, with the rabbits drawn in such an appealing and distinctive way . . . a gripping page-turner of an adventure.”—Boing Boing
“Whether you’re an old fan or a new one, this is the book to read.”—Betsy Bird, School Library Journal
“The art manages to be both melancholic and dynamic, just like the tone of Adams’s novel. Sturm and Sutphin effectively convey a world as fraught and complicated as the human realm, yet entirely its own.”—Publishers Weekly
“A beautiful recapturing of what made the book so beloved when it was first published. The existential themes and dread from Adams’ novel are still there, but they’re beautifully translated in colorful artwork that’s reminiscent of Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit stories. This smart decision makes the book more appealing to readers than ever before, seeing to it that Adams’ story will continue to live on for many years.”—Screen Rant
“An immersive, breathtaking visual experience that carries readers through all the danger and beauty of this literary classic. Mark my words: this version of Watership Down will be just as influential as the original.”—Nate Powell, award-winning cartoonist of the March trilogy and Save It for Later
“An absolute masterpiece. Whether or not you’ve read the original, you will be pulled into this visually mind-blowing story that was created with so much care and heart.”—Tillie Walden, creator of Clementine
“The artwork captures what the book is attempting: to give the reader the vertigo of seeing animals we are acculturated to view as harmless while at the same time seeing the tension, peril, and depravity that we pretend we don’t see in ourselves.”—Russell Moore, Christianity Today
“A wonderful way for new readers to discover the story and for hardened fans to reconnect with Fiver, Hazel, Bigwig, and the gang.”—Joseph Coelho, Waterstones Children’s Laureate 2022–2024
“Watership Down is my favorite book, and I consider it to be one of the very greatest books of all time.”—SF Said, author of Varjak Paw and Tyger
“Every page of this adaptation is a loving tribute to Richard Adams’s masterpiece. I’ve walked the real Watership Down and can honestly say that Joe Sutphin’s gorgeous illustrations are the next best thing to being there.”—Andrew Peterson, author of The Wingfeather Saga

His body of work includes the official graphic novelization of Richard Adams’s masterwork Watership Down, the re-envisioned edition of Helen Taylor’s timeless classic Little Pilgrim’s Progress, Andrew Peterson’s beloved Wingfeather Saga, and many others. Hello! I'm a cartoonist and educator. I've created many award-winning graphic novels and have collaborated on several more. I'm also proud to have cofounded The Center for Cartoon Studies, a wonderful little cartooning school in White River Junction, VT.
Richard George Adams (born 9 May, 1920) is best-remembered as the author of Watership Down, but wrote many other novels, short stories, poems and a biography.
He originally began telling the story of Watership Down to his two daughters, Juliet and Rosamond, on a trip to Stratford-on-Avon, to see a play. They insisted he publish the tale as a book. When Watership Down was finally published, it sold over a million copies in record time in both the United Kingdom and the United States. Watership Down has become a modern classic and won both the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize in 1972.
Others of his books include Shardik, Maia, Tales from Watership Down, The Girl in a Swing and The Plague Dogs, the last two of which, together with Watership Down, have been filmed. His goal was always to tell a good story, ideally one so good you can't put it down! His last work, 'The Adventures of Eggbox Dragon', which is a picture-book for younger children, will be published posthumously by Hodder in 2017. It was written when he was 93.
During his later years Richard and his wife Elizabeth lived in Whitchurch, Hampshire, very close to Watership Down, and not far from where they had both grown up. He wrote about his childhood and youth, including the time he served in the army in World War II, in his biography 'The Day Gone By'.
During the last year of his life he kept a blog: https://www.watership-down.com/blog/. He died peacefully on Christmas Eve 2016.

Watership down is my favorite novel— seeing it adapted so perfectly is wonderful and I feel Richard Adams would be quite fond of it as well.
The book came in wonderful quality, it is a lot larger than expected, but that’s no issue! The only downside I have is the story does feel a lot more face paced— but that may just be me! After all, the surroundings aren’t being described anymore, as they are illustrated.
This book is great for anyone who wants to read watership down, whether it is their first time, or they are familiar with the book.
However, this graphic novel does not do that. It has a lot of heart and beautiful illustrations. It is full of life and captures the story seriously and beautifully. The illustrations are simplistic but they are good. The hardcover of the book is beautiful and exciting and in no time at all will be thought of as a gorgeous collectors item that will complement the original novel. ❤️

The moment I realized this comic book exists I bought it, and I read it an hour after delivery.
Man this novel is amazing! This adoptation is also great, albeit I hoped for more story of El-ahrairah but even without that, it was amazing.
